Work + Life: Handling the Balance with Grace

Listen to this Post!

Adulting is hard. Like really hard. And that elusive work/life thing doesn't always balance out in the life of an entrepreneur. Danielle LaPorte writes, 'I no sooner want to be balanced than I want to be a “good” girl. “Balance” is not something I want to live down to.' There are all kinds of articles out on the interwebs telling people how they can achieve work/life balance by just doing this one thing. Tips for work/life balance make for really good SEO because people always wants tips + tricks. But many would argue that work/life balance is bullshit {me included}. Balance assumes that all things are equal. All things are not equal. And never will be. There is only flow. Going with the flow of your life + how you want to look + feel.

Last week I mentioned that cooking or cleaning an entrepreneur's house would be a great gift idea {hint, hint, wink, wink} + it's true! We are always thinking we could be making money during those hours spent on other tasks not related to work. But sometimes we just need a break. A break to run errands + grocery shop + have a glass of wine with friends. When my work + life are flowing with one another I am happier and more excited to tackle my next project.

Do more with your work + life balance

Work + life balance is defined as proper prioritizing between your work {career + ambition} and lifestyle {health + pleasure + spiritual development}. As an entrepreneur we don't work normal 9 to 5 jobs, we have coffee meetings, client meetings, traveling in some cases, dinner meetings and the list goes on. Work is always around us and we are always working {even when you can't tell, we are working in our heads}. Let's be honest there will never be an equal balance between work + life but we can definitely manage it better. I have found flow within Reiki practices + crystals, personally, and collaboration + involvement, professionally, but I know that woo-woo stuff isn't for everyone.

Finding flow between my work + my life is critical to everything working just the way to should be.

I'm asked ALL the time about time management, and I think the work/life balance discussion goes hand-in-hand with getting all the so-called balance managed. Here are some of things I do to manage my work + life flow:

  • Automation: I feel like I've been harping on this a lot lately but I don't think business owners utilize the automated system enough to make their lives sane. Granted, there is a good bit of upfront work to be done but it pays off in spades at the end of the day. And I'm not saying that everything in my business automated, just some things. If you need help with some tips on this, go check out Evernote School. You can get it straight to your inbox.
  • Reiki/Spirituality: Energy work + self care do double duty in helping you professionally + personally. It's great for clearing out some blocks + finding the balance within yourself that leads to clarity about you + your work. Some great apps for mediation are Headspace + Inscape.
  • Disconnect: I know this one is hard. We live in a connected world + want to be on top of all the things. I've gotten to the point where I conscientiously make an effort to not look at my phone at dinner or when I'm in the presence of someone else, even if they look at their phone. Just not doing it. I turn off the electronics every now + then too {it's probably more like they die, if they die I take that as a sign that I need to disconnect for a bit}. Don't always be accessible. This also sets boundaries with you clients on your availability for them, which we all definitely need.
  • Dinner Dates with Bubbly: I think that says it all. We all need that support group we go to when things get rough or need a good laugh. When I'm not traveling I try to have dinner with my friends a couple nights a week to catch up on things + enjoy a glass of the bubbly. I believe by now we all know my stance on bubbly.

Everyone seems to have their own idea of what work/life balance looks like + how to achieve it. This is not a new topic for me to write about. I've expressed my need for finding the elusive work/life balance before. You can read about it here. What are some of the things you do to balance your work + life? Leave a comment or find me on Instagram {that's my jam these days} and let's discuss. This is a good talk for this time of the year with so much holiday buzzing around + we could use some tips on how to handle it all.
